11/1/09 BROOKLYN 36 BLACK RIVER 22
The Hurricanes accomplished a rare feat, while the Pirates squandered an opportunity to play one more week. With a 36-22 upset of Black River in Patriot Athletic Conference action, the Hurricanes finished the season 5-5—their best record in 12 seasons and ensured the Pirates would fall short of the playoffs.
Black River coach Al Young blamed himself and the coaching staff for what he said was his team’s lack of preparation. "We did not play well, we turned the ball over, we did not play good defense," Young said. "We did not prepare for this game. I feel bad for the seniors. We should have played better. "We got pushed around. We got beat up inside, we got beat up off-tackle. We got thrown on. We did not do a good job defensively tonight. We did not play well in pretty much every phase of the game."
Black River (5-5) responded with a scoring drive of its own. Quarterback Joe Seneff set up his own 1-yard touchdown sneak with a 30-yard pass to Jake O’Connor, who nearly scored after he came down with the tipped pass. The defense forced a punt after three plays and Black River drove 46 yards in five plays. Matt Joppeck (17 carries, 162 yards) plowed over fromthe 1 to give the Pirates a 22-20 lead.
Brooklyn regained control from there. On the ensuing possession, Deluca marched his team downfield and connected with junior wide receiver Adam Paul, who made a diving 30-yard touchdown reception. The touchdown was Paul’s first of the season and gave the Hurricanes the lead at 28-22. The Pirates fumbled on their last chance to salvage a playoff berth. They took over with 4:07 left and drove almost to midfield, but senior Jay Seneff was stripped and the ball popped into the hands of Hurricanes defensive back Travis Burgess. Burgess then took off down the left sideline and scored the game’s final points.
